Our research projects...
...We are continuously involved in various research projects and work together with OEMs, research institutions and many other companies to drive forward innovative solutions.

The intelligent combination of fiber composites with classic construction materials - so-called multi-material design - leads to a targeted exploitation of material-specific advantages. The MM3D project aims to research and test generative manufacturing technologies for multi-material lightweight structures with an application-oriented structural-mechanical property profile and associated tool technologies on an MM3D demonstrator.project sponsor: Institute of Lightweight Structures and Polymer Technology (TU Dresden)The project is funded by the European Union and the Free State of Saxony.

NEXHOS - Next generation high-voltage storage
In cooperation with the Project Management Jülich (PTJ) and the project partners BMW AG, BASF SE, ABB Automation GmbH, Diehl Metal Applications GmbH, MAHLE Behr GmbH und Co. KG and HBW-Gubesch Kunststoff-Engineering GmbH. (Final report, 01.11.2012-30.04.2016)

Bio-UD-Tapes
Development of an integrative manufacturing process suitable for series production based on bio-based, continuous fiber-reinforced, unidirectional laminates for load-bearing lightweight structures and stressed components in the automotive sector. This work is being carried out together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS in Halle (Saale) and VW as an associated partner.
THIXOM
Process-technological and constructive-technological development of a thixomolding process for the production of large-area reinforced magnesium/thermoplastic support structures. The project is supervised by PTKA - Project Management Agency Karlsruhe. Our partners in this project are Volkswagen AG, TU Dresden - Institute for Lightweight Construction and Plastics Technology, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (Center for Materials Research), Neue Materialien Fürth GmbH, Reiloy Reifenhäuser Group, druckguss service deutschland GmbH, Coperion GmbH.
Provision of a modular system consisting of flat basic structures and hollow profiles made of fiber-thermoplastic composites as well as the process-technical linking of primary and forming process steps to a fully automated overall system, which makes it possible to realize a cost-effective and large-scale production of structural components made of fiber-plastic composites with thermoplastic matrix. This project is supervised by PTKA - Project Management Agency Karlsruhe. Project partners: Brose Fahrzeugteile GmbH & Co. KG, ARBURG GmbH + Co. KG, Werkzeugbau Siegfried Hofmann GmbH, ElringKlinger AG - Lenningen plant (Hummel molds), Schmalz GmbH, GWK mbH, AUMO GmbH, PHP Fibers GmbH, ITV Denkendorf, Institute for Textile and Process Engineering, TU Dresden, Institute for Lightweight Construction and Plastics Technology. Associated partners: Porsche AG, Johns Manville Europe GmbH, Plasmatreat GmbH
In the hypro project, a physical and virtual process chain for fiber composite plastic-metal hybrid structures is to be set up and analyzed in near-series production scenarios, which, due to its practical relevance, demonstrates a competitive path for hybrid materials in industrial applications. The core of this process chain is a flexible production cell using injection molding combination technology, which enables versatile and fully automated pre-treatment of a wide range of metallic and non-metallic materials. The continuous inline recording of process data in the customized system, tool and handling technology provides a comprehensive database for process analysis.

The trend towards multi-material lightweight structures requires the combination of different manufacturing processes. At the ILK, intensive research is being conducted into the inline joining of light metal and plastic using the innovative DuoCast vertical die casting machine. Thanks to a high level of automation, cycle times, energy consumption and costs have been reduced and innovative hybrid structures successfully produced. GK Concept was an associated partner in this research project.
